Lava/ Kusha Kalaga (Reunion of Lord Rama with his sons, Lava Kusha)
Uttara Kanda the last book of the epic Valmiki Ramayana deals with the return of Rama to Ayodhya and his coronation to the throne.
After the war, a victorious Rama, Sita and Lakshmana return to the kingdom of Ayodhya. While the folks were ecstatic about Rama’s return, they questioned Sita’s chastity. They gossip that since she had stayed a long time in another man’s home, she was not to be accepted by Rama as his wife. Rama knew and believed Sita to be truthful. However, he yields to public opinion and instructs Lakshmana to accompany Sita, pregnant at the time, and leave her in the forest.
In the forest, Sage Valmiki kindly offers Sita shelter in his ashram located on the bank of the Tamsa river. Sita gives birth to twins Lava and Kusha. Sage Valmiki raises the boys, educates them and imparts military skills. Soon the young lads grow into brave and courageous youths.
When Rama carries out the Ashvamedha Yagna, his horse strays into their forest. As the horse wanders freely across the land, no one stops it, or comes in its way. In fact, whenever the horse trots through a village or a town, people come out in hordes to welcome it, and gladly acknowledge the authority of Rama.
Not aware that Rama was their father, the twins capture the horse. Rama’s brothers Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna seek its release, but the twins refuse. The twins engage in conflict and defeat Rama’s brothers with ease. Eventually, Rama himself confronts the twins in battle. As they valiantly fight Rama, Sage Valmiki interrupts them. It is at this point that Rama learns the identity of his sons. Valmiki offers to bring Kusha and Lava along with Sita to Rama’s court the following day.
Rama is reunited with his sons, who become his legitimate heirs.
