Wellcome Trust UK International Engagement Grant

https://fotballsonen.com/2024/03/07/7440iebt40e Jagriti, in conjunction with Theatrescience UK and the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore, has been awarded a Wellcome Trust UK International Engagement grant. This is for work that engages and brings about public awareness on bio-medical issues, through the arts. This year the issue is in the field of anti-microbial resistance (AMR), a global problem, but one that looms even larger in India, over foetal and infantile health.

The outcome of the project is a play titled  The Vaidya’s Oath written by Gautam Raja. The dramaturge and director is Jeff Teare of Theatrescience UK. The scientific advisor is Dr. Mukund Thattai of NCBS. Two plays, also written by Gautam Raja, from previous similar projects are  The Invisible River - about bacteriophages in the river Ganga -  and  The Clearing - dealing with the consequences of the invasive flora Lantana Camara.

https://www.lcclub.co.uk/aauhq7g0sz Jagriti’s 10-year collaboration with Theatrescience UK and the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) has been a rich and rewarding one. Two earlier awards to Theatrescience have given us rich returns in the field of drama as a tool to bring about awareness of biomedical issues apart from, of course, the new plays that it has provided.

While these are responsibilities Jagriti deals with all the time as a theatre company with a physical theatre space to run (www.jagrititheatre.com), it does bring with it a new perspective on the public engagement front.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a world problem but is especially an
Indian one. In a land with more mobile phones than toilets trying to keep
AMR at bay is hard. It may seem like someone else’s problem. Try telling
that to Kamala and her newborn baby with sepsis… - Jeff Teare
