Najoomi is an Urdu word meaning something immense or great, it also means ‘astronomer’. Najoomi is a story about a man in his late 20’s who is trapped inside his own thoughts which makes him turn into a person of his own decision, it surrounds all of the events he goes through in his daily life. The play is set in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) during the 1980’s when the rapidly growing industry of Bollywood and unemployment had a large influence on the youth. Popular songs such as ‘Jhoom Jhoom Jhoom Baba’ and ‘Log Kehte Hai Main Sharabi Hoon’ can be used as examples to draw a frame of time. The background of the play is stereotypically UPite and themes such as poetry, memory, unemployment and innocence, with a touch of absurdity in the storyline is its core foundation.Read More
