Adapted from the 1967 play by Israel Horovitz, this absurdist drama is still a perfect reflection of the world we live in. Standing behind a white line, five people fight for the first spot in the queue, and their attempts get more and more callous as the play proceeds. A cricket fanatic who feels hard work deserves it’s due, a Rahman fan who manipulates everyone with his rigmarole, a conniving female who uses her sexuality to lure the men out of line, her confused, germophobic husband, and a selfish elderly gentleman who looks out only for himself - each character, though different in their ways of thinking, have one goal which is to come first. Just by sheer scale, it is pitted to be the biggest youth theatre festival in India – with over 120 actors – 10 campus groups and 7 plays over one weekend at The Museum Theatre, Egmore! The Protector, written by Sudipta Bhawmik, craftily tests the boundaries of parental rights and sheds light on the struggle of immigrant couples. An Indian couple, in their early 20's, settled in the United States, come to terms with the CPS (Child Protection Service), on the account of alleged ill-treatment of their infant. The couple hopelessly stranded in foreign lands, seek the help of their most trustworthy friends, to fight against the rudimentary system, and in the process, regain custody of their child. After four houseful shows in July 2016, they are back again with renewed vigor, more content and a grander presentation of the play Ek Shaam Premchand Ke Naam. Munshi Premchand believed that literature is the trustworthy knowledge that lights our paths when we lose our way, and litterateurs are the torch-bearers of this truth. He was the first Hindi author to introduce social realism in his writings. He believed in social evolution, and his ideal, was equal opportunities for all. Ek Shaam Premchand Ke Naam is an anthology of his short stories and stage adaptations of the same, along with a glimpse into his life events. Kafan - A dark comedy and a heart-wrenching story. It deals with the survival instincts of the dirt poor. Sadgati - Premchand deals with the social exploitation of the untouchables, their abject poverty and their dehumanization by the upper class. A dark truth which keeps re-surfacing even in today's India... Panch Parmeshwar- A story of responsible behavior, when you are put in a position of power. Poos Ki Raat- A story of a poor farmer who struggles to ward off the bitter cold of winter nights, with only his dog for company... Literature according to Premchand, is a powerful means of educating public opinion. A new interpretation of the age old classic. Romeo and Juliet is given an almost modern yet timeless depiction with actors speaking in the original text. What is unique about this production is that the set consists of just 12 transparent cubes that are rearranged and modified in different ways to build scenes such as the balcony as well as the tomb where Juliet lies, right in front of the audience itself as the play progresses. Love is visually represented in many forms throughout the play, right from the costumes to the lights that emanate from the scene itself and music that accompanies the play to compliment the emotions shown on stage.Read More

Her work ranges from classical music to classical modernism to new music; From the waltz era to superior coffee house music, swing, pop, musical, film music, Argentinian tango, to the pop music of our days. What would a writer do if one of his characters develops a mind of his own, when all other characters are perfectly happy going round and round within the boundaries that the writer has set for them? In "Evam Indrajit", Badal Sircar's abstract, semi-autobiographical play, a writer, who feels tortured by the need for creative expression in an undramatic world, tries to create a play with the audacious character, Indrajit, who "sees life realistically and dreams about it romantically." His muse, Manasi, remains elusive, and the characters that he summons are mundane and undramatic, no different from the people around him.  Indrajit, created in the image of the writer himself, stands outside routine existence. Failing in his attempts at tying Indrajit to a plot, the writer faces a nightmarish writer's block that pushes him into a moment of literary crisis. As he grapples with the existential crisis of Indrajit, we are presented at once with a macroscopic view of our own life, in which everything seems to be stuck in a repetitive loop, without purpose, without essence. "Evam Indrajit" is a timeless play that analyzes the question of identity, of the essence of life, against an apparently meaningless, existentialist backdrop.
