Shaiva Koothu
Shaiva Koothu
Shaiva Koothu is a performance series based on the Tamizh saint Thiru Karaikkal Ammaiyar’s “Thiruvalangattu Mootha Thiruppadhikam”. Thiru Karaikkal Ammaiyar was a remarkable female poet and devotee of Lord Shiva who lived during the 6th century CE in Tamil Nadu, India.
Shaiva Koothu is a vibrant and expressive Nangiar Koothu (solo storytelling tradition of the female performers of Koodiyattam) that incorporates elements of music, dance, and storytelling. It serves as a means to portray the spiritual and mystical experiences of Thiru Karaikkal Ammaiyar and her deep devotion to Lord Shiva. The songs and verses sung during Shaiva Koothu are in Tamizh, and they beautifully convey Thiru Karaikkal Ammaiyar's spiritual experiences, her love for Lord Shiva, and her journey towards enlightenment.
Kapila Venu adapts this work for the first time in the history of Koodiyattam.
