The Middle Class Gentleman
The year 2022 marks the 400th birth anniversary of one of the greatest French playwrights, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name, Moliere, who was born in 1622. Bangalore Little Theatre (BLT) celebrates Moliere’s 400th anniversary with the adaptation of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (The Middle-Class Gentleman). Incidentally, this was the first theatre production of BLT in December 1960.
The play, a comedy, is about a merchant, Monsieur Jourdain. He aspires to join the aristocracy by learning fencing, music, dancing and wearing fancy clothes. In the process, he makes a complete fool of himself, much to the dismay of his intelligent wife. At the end, he is tricked into believing that his daughter Lucile will marry into Turkish royalty, in an elaborate and ridiculous ceremony staged by the daughter's middle-class suitor in cahoots with M. Jourdain's valet and Madame Jourdain.
